In Australia, we are in a housing crisis. Which is particularly affecting first home buyers. This could be due to the lack of policies around people outside of Australia purchasing homes as ‘investment’ properties, rising cost of living across the world, low wages, and changes in what homes people want to live in.
According to the 2021 Census, 23% of people that experiencing homelessness were aged 12-24 years old. While homes were getting more expensive, more people have been going homeless and being unable to live. This is a very concerning trend that we need to rectify as soon as possible.
That doesn’t mean the government isn’t doing anything. The National Housing Accord includes a target of building one million new, affordable, and well-located homes across Australia over 5 years, starting mid-2024. While it doesn’t address every issue, it means we are going in the right direction.
